P0455: Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (Large Leak)

Large EVAP leak, loose gas cap, purge or vent-system fault

What Does P0455 Mean?

P0455 means the EVAP system could not hold pressure during its self-test because the leak is large enough to be obvious to the PCM. The EVAP system stores fuel vapors and burns them later instead of venting them to the atmosphere. A missing gas cap, split hose, bad purge valve, or bad vent valve can all create the large leak the computer is seeing.

Is It Safe to Drive?

✅ Severity: Low. Yes. P0455 is usually one of the least urgent check-engine-light codes because it normally will not change how the engine runs. The bigger annoyance is the warning light, failed emissions readiness, and the fact that a constant EVAP light can hide a new code later if you stop paying attention to it.

Symptoms of P0455

Common Causes

  1. Loose, missing, or damaged gas cap
  2. Cracked EVAP hose or disconnected vapor line
  3. Stuck-open purge valve or vent valve
  4. Damaged charcoal canister or canister housing
  5. Rust or damage around the filler neck on older vehicles

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first for P0455?

Start with the symptom pattern, scan for companion codes, and inspect the most common easy failures tied to P0455 before replacing major parts.

Will P0455 come back after I clear it?

Yes if the root cause is still present. Clearing the code only turns the light off temporarily and should mainly be used after repair or to confirm the fault returns.
