P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

Catalyst efficiency low, O2 sensor pattern, upstream engine issue often involved

What Does P0420 Mean?

P0420 means the PCM thinks the Bank 1 catalytic converter is no longer cleaning up exhaust gases well enough. It decides that by comparing the front and rear oxygen sensor patterns. When the rear sensor starts acting too much like the front sensor, the converter is not storing oxygen and smoothing exhaust chemistry the way it should.

Is It Safe to Drive?

⚠️ Severity: Moderate. Usually yes if the engine runs smoothly and there is no major loss of power. But you do not want to replace a catalytic converter until you know why it failed, because misfires, oil burning, and rich running can kill the new one too. If the code is paired with misfire or fuel-trim faults, fix those first.

Symptoms of P0420

Common Causes

  1. Aging or damaged Bank 1 catalytic converter
  2. Rear oxygen sensor reporting catalyst behavior incorrectly
  3. Persistent misfire or rich-running condition that overheated the converter
  4. Engine oil consumption contaminating the catalyst substrate
  5. Exhaust leak near the manifold, flex pipe, or O2 sensor
  6. Coolant contamination from an internal engine issue

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first for P0420?

Start with the symptom pattern, scan for companion codes, and inspect the most common easy failures tied to P0420 before replacing major parts.

Will P0420 come back after I clear it?

Yes if the root cause is still present. Clearing the code only turns the light off temporarily and should mainly be used after repair or to confirm the fault returns.
