P0171: System Too Lean (Bank 1)
Lean air-fuel mix, hesitation, vacuum leak or MAF trouble
P0171 means the engine computer has reached the limit of how much extra fuel it can add to keep Bank 1 running correctly. The oxygen sensor feedback says the mixture is still too lean, so the PCM stores the code. Most of the time that means extra air is getting in, measured air is being reported wrong, or fuel delivery is falling short.
⚠️ Severity: Moderate. Usually yes for short trips if the engine is not knocking, surging, or misfiring badly. Still, a lean engine runs hotter than it should, and turbo vehicles are especially risky because boost multiplies cylinder heat fast. If the car hesitates hard under acceleration or adds misfire codes, stop driving it until you find the air leak or fuel issue.
Start with the symptom pattern, scan for companion codes, and inspect the most common easy failures tied to P0171 before replacing major parts.
Yes if the root cause is still present. Clearing the code only turns the light off temporarily and should mainly be used after repair or to confirm the fault returns.
